Down to Earth | Earth Day 2023
As an interior design company, we are celebrating Earth Day and Month by highlighting some of our “go to” sustainable design choices. We understand the importance of protecting our planet and believe that design can play a significant role in reducing our environmental footprint. In this blog, we will highlight some of our favorite sustainable design choices, including refurbished and vintage pieces, quality furniture selections, and some other simple suggestions
GO VINTAGE
Refurbished and vintage pieces are one of our favorite ways to incorporate sustainable design into your home. These items have a story and history that adds character and charm to any space. It’s a super sustainable choice, and it’s something we love doing at Interior Impressions. We’re all about breathing new life into second-hand furniture, and we do it with almost every project we take on. There’s something really special about taking a piece of furniture that’s been forgotten or neglected and turning it into something beautiful and functional again. Plus, by using vintage pieces, we’re helping to reduce waste and minimize our impact on the environment and keep them out of landfills. So, if you’re up for a little treasure hunting, let’s go vintage and create a space that’s both unique and sustainable!
QUALITY FURNITURE SELECTIONS
Dual-purpose fabrics are a great way to extend the life of your furniture and reduce waste. Many of these types of fabrics are designed to be used both indoors and outdoors, making them perfect for homes with kids, pets, or frequent guests. That’s why we mostly select environmentally responsible, green-certified upholstery lines for our projects. These products meet strict environmental standards, ensuring that they’re made with minimal harm to the planet. We also prioritize quality when selecting furniture for our clients. By choosing high-quality pieces, we ensure that they’ll last for years to come, reducing the need for replacement and further reducing our environmental impact. The companies we prefer use high quality wood frames, and minimize the use of foams, glues, plastics and VOCs that create harmful off-gassing. So, when you work with us, you can trust that you’re not only getting a beautiful space but also an environmentally responsible one!
SIMPLE SOLUTIONS
In addition to the sustainable design choices already mentioned, there are other methods of reducing your environmental footprint through interior design that we usually integrate into our specifications. Here are some of our go-to ideas:
- Use energy-efficient lighting: Switching to LED light bulbs can save you money and reduce your energy consumption. Just make sure to stick with our favorite kelvin number around 3000k for that soft but bright glow!
- Choose low-VOC paint: Paint can release harmful chemicals into the air, so choosing low-VOC (volatile organic compound) paint is a healthier and more sustainable option.
- Invest in high-quality furniture: Buying high-quality, durable furniture means it will last longer and won’t need to be replaced as frequently.
- Incorporate plants into your design: Plants not only add visual interest to a space but also purify the air and provide a sense of calm.
Earth Month is an excellent time to reflect on our environmental impact and make sustainable choices in our daily lives. As an interior design company and as individuals, we are committed to the health of our planet. Just making a few small choices that could have a positive impact on the environment are steps in the right direction. We hope that our suggestions for refurbished and vintage pieces, quality furniture selections, and other sustainable choices will inspire you to make sustainable choices in your own home. And if you have any more questions on how sustainability can influence design, remember we are here to help! Let’s work together to create beautiful, functional spaces that also protect our planet.
