This project was so much fun! Our clients were really ready to update their upper level and were very easy going and open to our ideas for redesigning their bedrooms and bathrooms. With their 2 boys now in college, they wanted to make the bedrooms and bathroom a little more “grown-up”. Their primary bedroom and bathroom was always a neglected space and it was time for them to have a beautiful retreat at the end of the day. They also wanted to update their main entrance and the stairway, since that was a big focal point when you entered their home. Our clients love the water and spend a lot of their time boating on the river in Minnesota, and now spend part of the year living in sunny Florida on the ocean. They wanted their home to reflect some of the things they love, but without being too “theme-y” of a coastal look. We decided that we would keep a very classic and timeless look, in keeping with the architecture of their home, but also bring in a waterfront vibe to re-create the restful and serene feeling that a great beach vacation brings. Read on to see what we did to update this beautiful home!
The foyer
Well, what can we say? The foyer was very interesting and unique with the large fish displays and the airplane parts hung from the upper walls! Although they provided great conversation starters for guests, we all agreed that it was time they moved to another area of the home so we could make the foyer a little more sophisticated and classy. The stairway itself needed updating also. Goodbye colonial style golden oak railings and posts!
the Before
the after
Hello sunshine! This foyer received a major facelift with all new stairway parts, a lovely patterned herringbone carpet runner, all new doors, a new gorgeous light fixture, new wall sconce light, and my favorite part – beautiful white custom millwork throughout! Now the conversation when people enter this home, is “WOW! How beautiful is this foyer?!!” We left one memento from their previous decor and kept the sea turtle statue. After all, they were pretty cute and the statue fit perfectly on the ledge .We also added a pretty console table and some gorgeous seaside artwork to draw your eye up to the 2nd floor landing. The outdated wall sconce light was removed to make way for the new artwork as well.
the primary bedroom
The before
Our clients were VERY ready to get rid of their 90’s style headboard, armoire, and shiny gold ceiling fan. For being such a large room, it felt surprisingly crowded. Our goal was to give them a beautiful space that felt fresh, updated, relaxing and welcoming.
The after
We added a stunning feature wall with custom millwork and painted it a gorgeous shade of blue. The bed and console table bring the coastal vibe with a lovely rattan texture. The nightstands and dresser are a simple but pretty “classic” design in a soft white. Two cozy swivel chairs in a classic plaid create a welcoming spot to sit and have a conversation, or just curl up with a book at enjoy the beautiful backyard view. We added brushed gold wall sconce lights, a new updated ceiling fan, One of my favorite additions is the window coverings. We selected hand-woven roman shades from Hartman & Forbes. They are so beautiful and really frame out the windows in a soft, elegant manner. The bedding is also so pretty and really ties everything together. We layered the4 bed with cozy, Belgian linen coverings and brought in some touches of blue with custom made floral Euro pillows and a navy linen bolster. This room is now one of their places to be. Besides the beach, of course!
the en-suite primary bathroom
Before
So many things in this bathroom were not working for our clients. The shower was too small, the plumbing was not working very well, and the vanity wasn’t providing very functional storage. Most of all, it really needed updating.
After
We removed the corner jacuzzi tub and replaced it with a free-standing soaking tub. We expanded the shower and added all new tile, a bench and a shampoo niche. There are now 2 showerheads and a handheld sprayer for a much more pleasurable showering experience. We enclosed the toilet space, added a taller custom made vanity with a lot more storage. The cabinetry is made from a beautiful rift sawn white oak. Cararra marble countertops, custom framed mirrors, wall-mounted faucets, and lovely hanging pendant lights really elevate this bathroom to a luxurious space. Pocket doors keep the space open and unobstructed. Cararra marble floor tile was set in a herringbone pattern to add interest. the window coverings bring in a touch of coastal with the white woven woods from Hunter Douglas. We used a soft champagne gold finish on the plumbing fixtures, lighting and cabinet hardware to bring in warmth as a contrast to the gray and white marble tile. The lovely floral wallpaper and the crystal chandelier really bring the icing on the cake!

the primary closet
the before
Our clients had a fairly large closet, but like most of us have, it wasn’t the most functional. We enlisted the help of our friends at California Closets to help bring organization and style to this adjacent closet.
the after
We removed the standard door and the clothes chute opening and brought in a pretty glass and wood sliding door. The finish on the closets is a soft sandy white with a brushed texture. My favorite part is the illuminated shoe cabinet with a faux leather backing. I think it would feel special even to grab a pair of flip flops!
the boys’ bathroom
the before
It was very cute – with the ocean waves and the fish theme, but the boys had definitely outgrown it! It was time for an update and a more mature look. The fiberglass shower surround and short shower door was difficult for their very tall football playing sons. The tall linen closet was so deep and had fixed shelves, so it wasn’t providing very functional storage either. the shower fixture was also very dated and wasn’t providing the best shower experience either.
the after
Voila! A much more grown-up bathroom, but still a fun, whimsical space that can grow with kids of any age. We got rid of the plate glass mirrors and brought in round free-hanging mirrors. We added new black metal light fixtures with a touch of a nautical feel. A brand new custom build vanity in a soft blue-gray color was brought in with more drawers and better storage. The linen cabinet and wall was removed to make way for a full height cabinet built as part of the vanity. No there are adjustable, shallower shelves for much more functional storage. Fun black and nickel cabinet hardware, black bath fixtures, and matte black faucets and plumbing really update the look. We used a floor tile that looks like wood but is actually porcelain. A new, deeper bathtub was brought in so the home still has a bathtub for resale to a family with young children, or perhaps for future grandchildren of their own. All of the rooms on the upper level got new 4 panel shaker doors and had the baseboards and trim painted white. My personal favorite part of this bathroom is the plaid tile in the shower. I absolutely love the richness of the navy and gray colors, and it brings such a classic, timeless element to this bathroom and provides so much personality! We used a frameless glass shower door also so you could see this stunning shower without anything blocking the view!
We hope you enjoyed the tour of this beautiful classic, coastal remodel!
