The fireplace is the focal point of the room, the spot to decorate for every season change. With the weather cooling off, fall is the perfect time to update your fireplace mantel decor and know how to style it. It’s important to create a focal point that is aesthetically pleasing in order to set the tone of your space. Our blog takes you through how to do just that.
our tips for decorating your mantel

1. Consider your fireplace’s characteristics when determining how to style it. Every fireplace and its mantel is unique. Each one has its own color, size, material, etc. For example, if your mantel is made of wood, we recommend mixing in metal, glass, and a mirror. You wouldn’t want too much wood on top of a wood mantel, right? Unless it’s white washed. Then adding in a warm wood-framed mirror or picture frame would look lovely! We love how Chris Loves Julia has an assortment of materials on their mantel.

2. Use items with different heights, sizes and shapes. Adding dimension to your display creates interest and avoids any area looking too heavy. It also encourages your gaze to flow across the display naturally. We love Park & Oak’s use of different frame heights here.

3. Placing items in odd numbers, rather than pairs, usually looks best. Amy recommends placing items together in groups of three or five. For example, place three books together, or three candles at varying heights together. We love how Becca Interiors implemented this practice here!

4. Avoid over-cluttering your mantel. Having too many items can overwhelm the focal point and lose it’s wow factor. An easy way to avoid doing this is to center a large piece of artwork or a mirror over (or set on) your mantel to take up a big portion of the area. Then place decor items in odd numbers on either side of the centerpiece.

5. Decorate for the season. Fall is the perfect time to update your fireplace. Incorporate warmer tones throughout your candles, frames, etc. Decorative pumpkins are always cute, too! Pottery Barn has some adorable ones this season! Cherished Bliss did this perfectly with their fireplace pictured above.
We hope these tips help you create a gorgeous focal point for the fall season and beyond. Happy decorating!

It’s quite helpful to read your suggestions about how to properly use items that are of different shapes and sizes when decorating a fireplace. Something like this will really help us out with getting our living room completely re-done and have the makeover feel really impressive. I’ll go and ask a home heating expert to help me out with the fireplace installation to get this started.
