As we say goodbye to collectively the most intense and difficult year in (most of) our lifetimes, we look ahead to a brighter 2021. We’ve come to have a new appreciation for our homes and the people in it this year. Home offices have never been more used, and personal spaces within the home have never been so important. As a well-designed home office continues to have high importance in 2021, so does personality and having a sense of calm when at home. Check out some of our forecasted design trends of the new year below.
1. ECLECTICISM
We spent so much time at home in 2020, which made us reflect on how much our environment impacts us. Our homes are a reflection of us and those that live with us, so I think 2021 is the year in which we are completely authentic in our design styles. We have been inspired by Kate Arends of Wit and Delight this year who is totally just going for it in her historical St. Paul home. Her home had lots of color and personality to begin with, and she is honing in on that while making it hers. We should follow suite… 😉
2. NATURAL MATERIALS
Natural, earthy, airy, organic are all words we think we will be hearing more of this year. Mixing natural elements in a space helps bring peace and tranquility to a home. We love the use of natural stone in as many places as possible, along with wood, soft textiles, and ceramics.
3. VINTAGE PIECES
It is high time that we put sustainability at the forefront. One easy way to do so is to shop vintage. Remember reduce, reuse, recycle? Repurpose those gems that your grandmother held on to. Give new life to your aunt’s post-modern chairs that you adore, but need a little TLC. Not only does this help lower your carbon footprint a bit, but vintage pieces add character and personality to your home. Mixing old with new? We love to see it and will be seeing more of it in 2021.
4. BOLD COLORS
Go big or go home in 2021. Bold colors are making a comeback. We are seeing the gray walls and white kitchens phasing out, and color is coming in. Another trend that did not make the list but we’ve been hearing inklings of is the phasing out of accent walls. Instead, people are fully committing to adding bold and beautiful wallpaper or features to all of the walls. Would you go bold?
5. EARTH TONES
Contradictory to the previous trend, earth tones will also be holding steady in 2021. Like previously stated, the grays and whites are sort of phasing out and we are seeing warmer tones come back in a modernized way. We are personally loving the clay tones in textiles and ceramics.
6. EPIC HOME OFFICES
2021 will continue to have many still working from home, so why not make the situation as good as it can be? We have had many reach out to us to revamp their home office this year and the trend will continue into the new year. Peek below for inspiration.
7. POST-MODERN INSPIRATION
Mid-century modern was in in 2020, but now we are starting to see a move toward post-modern furniture pieces. You can see this trend showing up with curvy lines, bold colors, and texture.
There you have it, our design trend forecast for 2021. Here is to hoping for a brighter, calmer, and more joyful year. Happy New Year!
