We’re all guilty of scrolling Pinterest and Instagram drooling over how picture perfect everyone else’s Christmas trees look, but when it comes to our own, it’s hard to get it right. And now that it’s socially acceptable to put up our Christmas decorations post-Thanksgiving, we’re here to share all of our best tips. Whether you’re team real tree or team faux tree, keep reading to see how you, too, can achieve that designer Christmas tree look in your own home!
1. Light it up!
First things first– lights! We like to think of of decorating a Christmas tree in layers, and lights are the first and arguably most important layer of them all. Light technology is crazy these days– there’s LED, color, white, sparkling, color changing, lights that blink to music! There’s really no right or wrong here, just go with what makes you happy and that will coordinate well with your theme. Which leads us to our next tip!
2. Decorate around a theme
This is often the hardest part because there are endless possibilities to choose from! Our best advice is to look back at all the pictures you have like, saved, drooled over, etc. and pull out common themes you notice between them. For example, if you noticed yourself drawn towards trees with muted tones, maybe you go with a neutral color scheme. Or maybe you liked a lot of pictures with certain colors, patterns or textures, like plaid, velvet or wood tones. Whatever the case may be, make a list of these common features and develop a theme around them. This will help you decide what decorations you need to source!

3. Ribbon and garland
Layering in ribbon or garland will really help elevate your tree’s aesthetic. Try pairing different sized and colored or patterned ribbons or garland, offering your tree variety and interest. We recommend using ribbon with wired edges so that it is easier to twist, turn and sculpt with your tree.

4. Assorted ornaments
Choose ornaments based on your theme. Not everything has to match perfectly, but try to coordinate ornaments based on similar or complimenting colors, patterns and textures. Also keep in mind to choose ornaments of different shapes and sizes, again offering variety and interest to your design.
When hanging ornaments, place like ornaments all at once so you can evenly space them out around your tree. This will ensure that your tree has a well balanced look when all the ornaments are hung. For an even more elevated look, swap out your traditional metal ornament hooks for twine or ribbon to hang some of your more prominent ornaments.
5. Tree picks
Tree picks are a great way to add a little extra ‘oomf’ to your tree. Picks come in a variety of arrangements, from pine stems to berries to florals to pinecones. Again, choose picks that will compliment your theme and add an extra layer of flare to your design!
6. Tree bases
Dress up your tree with an appropriate base. Traditionally tree skirts are the way to go, but you can also use a tree collar or even a basket to make your tree look more decorative! Here’s a few of our favorite tree base looks.
7. Tree topper
Last, but certainly not least, the cherry on top! Except in this case, its a star, angel, bow– whatever you desire! Choose a tree topper that not only fits your theme, but is also eye catching. You may also want to take into consideration the height of your tree and ceilings to make sure you leave enough room.
