Is it time to take your home into the new decade? Today we’re talking about how to plan your home projects for 2020. Beginning to think of all the updates you want to tackle in the new year is a daunting task. Whether it’s an older home with history or a development new build, there is always a project on the list to change or update. We are here to tell you that the time is now, and are sharing steps to help you plan your home projects.
DISCUSS DREAMS
Between opening up walls, updating furniture and finishes, repairing creaky floors, or imagining a more functional layout, how can your home work better for you? Sometimes we love the character or location of a home, but the house itself isn’t our dream home. In my own home, I often find myself wandering from room to room and looking around each space, imagining what I would change if I could. Sometimes it’s as simple as a light fixture and paint, in others it’s adding a fireplace or moving walls and windows to create a better layout. Discuss with your partner or designer what your dream home would look like within those four walls.
LIST OUT PRIORITIES
Unfortunately, we can’t always accomplish everything at once. After you’ve discussed all your wishes and dreams for your home projects, get serious about prioritizing what’s most important to change first, then second, and so on. We encourage our clients to work in phases because it’s more budget friendly and helps the clients focus on the task at hand. Maybe creating a functional mudroom for your family is more important than a glamorous master bathroom. Or finding room for a home office for your growing business is top priority, followed by a kitchen renovation. There are no wrong answers, it’s determining what works best for you and your family. Along the way you take on smaller projects with major impact.
DETERMINE FINANCIALS & TIMELINE
Do you have momentous life events happening at your home in the coming year(s)? One of the biggest mistakes we see homeowners make is having an unrealistic budget and timeline. Home improvement shows give homeowners the misconception that a whole main level renovation can be completed in under two months for practically pennies in the real world. It’s not the same for every project, but full kitchen and bathroom renovations can take six-eight months from start to finish, updating furnishings with custom furniture can take three-four months. Look far ahead to leave plenty of time for planning and execution of home projects.
