The Interior Impressions crew traveled to High Point, North Carolina this month to visit High Point Fall Market – the interior design industry’s largest event of the year. Amy, Jordan and Shannon visited hundreds of vendors, experiencing the beauty and innovation of new products, including furnishings, lighting, accessories, wallpaper, and beyond. We’ve compiled all they saw into the top 15 interior design trends from High Point Market Fall 2019. Each “Market” has our team returning to Minnesota overflowing with inspiration and energy to incorporate into client projects.
1. MULTIFUNCTIONAL PIECES
Investing in furniture that serves more than one purpose is always a win-win, especially if you live in a smaller home where every inch of space and piece of furniture needs to be maximized for function. Think extension console into dining tables, coffee tables with storage or seating, hidden storage in bed frames or chaise extensions. Talk to your interior designer about how to make your space and furniture work for you through storage solutions and creative floor plans.
2. SHERPA & BOUCLE
Is there anything cozier than soaking into a big fluffy side chair upholstered in warm sherpa or boucle fabric? Probably not, it’s hygge heaven. Boucle is a heavy weight fabric made of boucle yarn, usually of a wool and nylon blend, with a bubbly finish appearance and strong, durable construction. To keep your boucle side chair or dining chair looking fresh, regular vacuuming and sealing is required. To achieve this look, we love this affordable option with wonderful wood details.
3. ACRYLIC & RESIN
Acrylic and resin furniture always remind me of modern spaces with a futuristic glamor. Furniture using acrylic and resin are incredibly durable and easy to maintain. This elegant accent piece pairs well next a chunkier piece of furniture or dramatic feature. Layer an acrylic C-table to hug a dark colored sofa or put a “ghost” console table in front of a bold wallpaper wall.
4. WARM TONES
If you were one of the few who didn’t update your home to cool grays and whites, you’re back in style with taupe, beige and other warm tones making a comeback. There is a comforting effect of natural color ways bring ease and warmth to your home. If your home is light and bright with grays and whites, mix in warm tones with rugs, wood furniture pieces, leather and brass details. Brass finishes continue to grow in popularity and demand.
5. STONE & TERRAZZO
Marble may still reign as King, but terrazzo and other soothing stones and hard materials such as concrete are fighting for the throne. Terrazzo was the star of the 70s (sorry fiberboard basement paneling, maybe your moment will come back too) and is making a comeback for it’s colorful and playful installations. We saw terrazzo on side tables, pottery and in flooring. White marble with subtle gray veining is still being manufactured for every surface top possible, such as dining tables, side and coffee tables, dresser tops and backsplashes. Concrete brings a cool mix to the party with visual weight. Just be careful not to stub your toe on these beautiful stone pieces.
6. MODERN MIX
We love the classic design elements of traditional or transitional styles that stand the test of time. Adding modern elements to a classic design elevates the space and adds a beautiful surprise. We saw modern lighting or playful wallpaper paired with traditional shaped furniture and finishes. We highly recommend selecting timeless classics for your “permanent” furnishings and finishes, and adding fun, modern pieces that can be easily interchanged.
7. ANIMAL PRINT
Leopard print is making a comeback in a big way this year in fashion and home decor. We saw stunning examples of animal print furnishings throughout Market and it made us absolutely excited. Leopard specifically adds warm tones and natural patterns to a space, as well as an undeniably fun flare. Zebra and cow prints are two other patterns that have also grown in popularity.
8. FERRULE CAP
A ferrule is the metal cap on a piece of furniture’s leg/foot to add strength and stability from wood splitting or wearing. In addition to support, this detail is beautiful to dress up a chair, console table, side table or desk. Like fashion, no outfit is complete without a great pair of shoes, right?
9. GREENS
Green is the new black. From upholstery to cabinetry, and everything in between, green was the color to be. Deep forest to olive tones lean more traditional and bright kelly green adds a charming, preppy flare. This color choice is here to stay for a while as it is morphing into a neutral color for many designers and homeowners updating their homes. The Pewter Green by Sherwin Williams cabinetry Queen Emily Henderson accomplished in her Portland project will be a resource of inspiration for ages.
10. CANING
Caning is a popular furniture making technique dating back to 1300 B.C. Dining chairs sporting a caned back and/or seat is very popular right now and we are completely on board. They give a nod to traditional casual dining and are easy maintenance. We also saw caning on the backs of accent chairs and sofas and as the paneling fronts of cabinets. It is a beautiful way to add natural elements.
11. NATURAL FIBERS & MATERIALS
Speaking of natural elements, natural fibers and materials are on the rise. We’ve talked about the benefits of using natural fibers and materials for a healthy home and sustainable living. We encourage using natural fibers and materials, as opposed to their synthetic counterparts, as much as possible. Natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, jute, silk and wool, are wonderful selections for your upholstery needs. Talk to your designer about the right fit for your needs, as some work better than others for different applications. We love the mix and layers of natural elements in the image above: wood cocktail table sitting on a hair on hide rug, laid over a jute base, protecting beautiful hardwood floors. Job well done!
12. METALLICS
Always add metallics to your space. This can be done through hardware, lighting and plumbing finishes, furniture pieces and through decor. We saw gold and brass all over High Point Market, and is a favorite amongst interior designers for its splash of glam and warm tones. Polished nickel is a classic finish option for bathrooms and kitchens. Chrome furniture leg details add an edgy glamor to your living room or bedroom.
13. FANCY BAR CABINETS
An entertainer’s must-have. A fancy bar cabinet optimizes function and beauty. Tuck away your secret stash in a beautiful sideboard piece, like this one from Universal Furniture. Display your collection of crafted spirits and beautiful glassware through glass doors and open shelving.
14. MIXED MATERIALS
This is an interior design must – mixed materials. In the kitchen, have wood lower cabinets and a painted upper. In the living room, we encourage playing with materials for side and accent tables. A wood coffee table with metal base, a stone-topped side table, and an acrylic C table wrapped around your sofa makes a space feel curated and well thought out. In your dining room, keep your cherished grandparents’ wood dining table and add cane and chrome Cesca chairs.
15. DETAILED HARDWARE
Statement hardware makes an impact on furniture pieces new and old. Hardware is like your furniture wearing jewelry – it can be subtle or substantial, glitzy or refined, sculptural or simple. Dress up a subdued console table with hardware with a unique shape or color. Complement a hutch with lots of detail with smooth or flat hardware. Replacing hardware on an existing piece of furniture is a quick and easy home improvement project.
Whew, we made it. What a wonderful and educational time we had at High Point Market. We are excited to incorporate these interior design trends and techniques to our client projects. Is there one you’re on board with? Let’s get started!
