Dining rooms often serve several uses in our homes beyond the communal dining hub. Dining rooms can become the home office, craft studio, laundry folding haven, headquarters for life lessons, and, most importantly, a place where memories are made. Dining rooms have really transformed in recent years from a formal space to a room that holds a lot more personality to reflect the people sitting around the table. We’ve compiled some of our favorite dining room pieces, including tables, chairs, counter stools, sideboards and lighting, that are unique and will step up your entertaining game. Let’s get started.
The dining table is probably considered the most important piece of furniture in the dining room for obvious reasons – it’s where we eat food! Dining table designs have come a long way in recent years for elevated craftsmanship and unique materials ranging from wood, to metal and stone. Linburg, Brooklyn and Coventry above all offer the warmth of solid wood, but offer modern shapes and details to stand apart. Adrien’s unique metal base will never falter and will always lend a hand to high style. Parker’s marble legs and mango wood top are drop dead gorgeous. When deciding on a dining table, consider how many seats you will need on average and how much space your room allows for. If you have a large square room, opt for a large round table. Round tables are great for inclusive conversation and sharing. Rectangular or oval tables are better for narrower spaces. Measure to ensure there is at least 30 inches of walking room between the table and chairs and the wall.
Dining chairs are such a great opportunity for high style and adding personality to the dining room! Consider comfort, height, and durability of construction and upholstery when deciding on these investment pieces. Can you tell we have an adoration for woven chairs – they happen to be our go-to for adding sophisticated comfort and coastal nod to a space. The Loom series is one of our favorites to source for clients for the high durability and intricate weaving (the indigo color is on another level!). Payson’s elevated channeling is luxurious and ready for guests to enjoy a nice, long meal together. Curate a mix and match of all your favorite chair styles to create a eclectic and fun room.
Gathering around the kitchen island or peninsula for more informal occasions and every day life is so heart warming. Deciding on durable, comfortable and high quality counter or bar stools are equally as important dining chairs. Choose the best materials and function for your family’s lifestyle: swivel, arms, backless, wipeable, etc. You may recognize Task from our Light & Bright Remodel for a busy family that adds functionality to their kitchen peninsula. Logan’s leather wrapped body and legs are sleek and easy for every day messes, while Frederick and San Rafael are great for tucking under the island in smaller kitchens.
Sideboards, or buffets, provide so much storage and functionality to a dining room. Sideboards are great for storing your entertaining platters and bowls, dishes and glassware. You know, the ones you save for when the Queen visits. Store seasonal serving decor and linens to save space in your kitchen cupboards. Sideboards also serve as a great spot for a dry bar or overflow food at your delicious dinner party. We love the personality the sideboards provide – from Lunas’s rounded edges to Thina’s scalloped bottom edge. Cosmopolitan’s indigo grasscloth body will make a statement to a neutral room and Cybil’s mirrored doors will make a room appear larger. If you opt for a sideboard with glass doors – make sure you keep your accessories orderly and styled.
Whether your space is more formal or casual, the light fixture(s) will set the tone for the room. They’re not as big of an investment piece as your dining room table and chairs, and can be easily changed as your style preferences evolve. Chandeliers like Alec and Sweeny are large in size and make a statement for the room. Dalilah, Clancy and Farallon are more casual and will set a more relaxed vibe to the space as pendants. Semi-flush fixtures like Fabian are great for dining rooms with lower ceilings and as more of an accent piece to a larger feature, such as statement wallpaper or large captain’s chairs.
Are you ready to update your dining room now? Remember to consider the functionality of your space and lifestyle when making decisions on these investment pieces. Reserve trendier items for elements that are easier to change out, such as lighting, paint or wallpaper, decor and artwork. If you need help refreshing your dining space – we would be happy to help!
