Inhale. Smell that? Fall is here! Well, not technically, but you know what we mean! With Labor Day behind us, we are in full fall mode over at Interior Impressions. Our team discussed how we decorate for fall and “nest” our homes for the cooler months ahead. The chunky throw blankets and autumnal colors are coming out and we’re getting ready to “fall” in love with being indoors. So light a pumpkin-spice-apple-crisp-sweater-weather-candle, put on your plaid scarf, and enjoy.
HOLIDAY READINESS
You read that right – we’re already getting our homes ready for the many fall and winter holidays that will be here before we know it. If you’re hosting this year and want to change things throughout your home, now is the time to take action! Even small renovations take time, so planning ahead will save yourself from making manic last minute decisions. A couple projects we often see clients scrambling for before the holidays include new flooring, custom furniture and window treatments, adding a backsplash, painting rooms, and refreshing decor. A note from the wise: a full blown kitchen or bathroom renovation can take months. If you haven’t begun this process yet, don’t let another minute go by to get started. Give our showroom a call at 651.337.2184 to get the ball rolling.
FIREPLACE
For many Minnesotans a fireplace is a must-have feature in their homes. It’s a refreshing feeling the first time you can start your fireplace on a cool fall day. This is your year to take the plunge and update or add a fireplace to your home. Whether wood burning, gas, or electric, a fireplace adds such a cozy ambiance to any space. For existing fireplaces needing a modern refresh, we have a couple recommendations to bring it into the next decade: replace the tile surround with a pattern and color you love, give new life to outdated brick, give it new texture with plaster or concrete, replace the mantle, or never underestimate the powder of paint.
CLEAN OUT
Similar to a spring clean out, fall is the perfect time to clean all the nooks and crannies and declutter. Cleaning isn’t the most beloved chore, but it is important to do regularly. It’s done best on a cool fall day with all the windows open, sun shining and great music playing. We are big advocates of the “Tidying Up” movement and the impact it has on our homes and health. This is a great time to get your vents cleaned out, professional carpet cleaning, swap out for “clean” cleaners, and replace air filters to optimize clean air through closed-window-season (that’s a thing, right?). Get the whole family involved and tackle it as a team. Don’t forget to celebrate afterwards for a job well done.
COOKING
Hotdish season is here! Hamburgers and hotdogs, it’s been fun, but we’re excited for the comfort meals that take all day to roast and enjoy with friends and family. We’re cooking up chili and hearty soups, pot roasts and all things apple. With less outdoor activities to do as the weather chills, making an event of meal time can become a source of entertainment. Host a hygge-themed dinner party with girlfriends or game day Sunday tailgate appetizers. We all love a beautifully displayed charcuterie board, but there’s no need to make things extravagant. Make things easier for yourself by utilizing crock pots, instant pots and the immense amount of one-pot dinner recipes on Pinterest.
MOODY MOMENTS
Oh we love a moody moment – in our rooms, not our kids 😉 Give us the dark tones, lush textiles and organic patterns. We get an itch to go bold with dark colors as the weather gets cooler. You don’t have go pitch black throughout your whole home or a single space, but add darker elements or feature such as bookcases or fireplace like above. If going to the dark side seems like too big of a commitment, utilize transitional pieces such as a smaller piece of furniture, throw pillows and blankets, rugs or artwork and decor. We don’t know how long the dark color trend will last, but we’re living for it while it’s here.
We welcome this new season with optimism and good intentions, albeit we are sad to see summer go. Enjoy the changing leaves, seasonal traditions and nesting into your home. Give us a call to get your projects on the move before the busy holiday season.
Cheers,
Interior Impressions
