As the first month of 2019 has come and gone (too quickly), we are looking ahead to trends we will be seeing throughout the rest of the year. Playful colors, customized products, and natural materials to name a few are some trends to look out for. For now, we say goodbye to gray on gray on gray, ornate furniture, and playing it safe with neutrals. We’ve categorized trends by room, with focus on the kitchen, living room, bathroom, bedroom, and a section on trending colors. Read on to see what we’ve been trendspotting!
KITCHEN
STATEMENT/BOLD APPLIANCES You mean I can have a black and gold range with a complimenting vent hood?!? Kitchen appliances are getting a major upgrade and we are all for it. Remember the cute, vintage refrigerators in pastel colors? Let’s bring that vibe back. With so many customization options, splurging on a beautifully detailed appliance or appliances in your kitchen is a sure way to craft the kitchen of your dreams! This is one trend that’s also featured in Emily Henderson’s post on 9 kitchen trends in 2019, which you can find here.
NATURAL STONE BACKSPLASH Quartz, marble, soapstone, granite, etc. countertops are no longer stopping at countertops. We are seeing the stone carried up the wall as backsplash. Just look at the gorgeous kitchen above by Amber Interiors chalked full of inspiration. The brass, stainless steel and black range and deep green cabinetry contrast well with it’s light counterparts above including the raw wood shelving, white paneling, and crisp white vent hood. In another photo, you can see just how swoonworthy rose gold can be in a kitchen.
DARKER COLORS The all white kitchen isn’t going out of style anytime soon, but there has been a push for darker colored cabinetry on the bottom cabinets and on islands. You’ll be seeing more of the dark navy blue, dark stains, charcoal, and rich greens in kitchens this year.
ARTISAN A hand-crafted, artisan look is on the rise. With home decor becoming so easily accessible and mass-merchandised with sites like Wayfair, people are craving more unique, one-of-a-kind items. We’ve seen an increase in hand-made products and a celebration of artisans. This trend offers an emotional connection to the loss of time, artistry and tradition. Along the lines of hand-crafted, we are seeing clients want to take “unique” to the next level by having products customized just for them. We have had so much fun with all of the new options that are available to designers to have products customized. Surprisingly, it’s quite affordable too. In the kitchen, you will see artisan/hand-crafted tile, raw wood, and handmade dishware showcased on open shelves.
LIVING ROOM
VIBRANT COLORS Neutrals are never going out of style, but we are seeing more and more color. You can continue to embrace white walls, but still add pops of color to your living room with a stunning vintage rug, vibrant pillows, or a bold sofa. Or, if you aren’t into the white walls kind of thing, add some statement wallpaper, or a jazzy, bold paint color!
VELVET Whether you are committing to a velvet sofa, or a few velvet throw pillows, the grand texture is a great addition to any room. Velvet adds richness and moodiness.
ANIMAL PRINT As we see more animal print show up in fashion, it has also infiltrated the interior design scene. Whether you are bold enough to incorporate a leopard print chair, or just want a dose with a cow hide print pillow, animal print is a FUN option!
MIXING STYLES Boho, Scandinavian, Farmhouse, Traditional, Vintage, Modern…..we’re seeing it all and we’re doing it all! The matchy-matchy days are long gone! Our homes are more about telling the story of who we are and what we love, and let’s face it…we don’t just love one particular style. Mixed metals are just expected these days. Burnished golds, satin brass, bronze tones, raw iron and black nickels are just a few of our favorites to mix together. Mixtures of metals and styles helps to create a more relaxed, warm and livable environment. Mixing warm and cool tones will give your space longevity as well. Try a warm gray wall color and add caramel colored leathers with charcoal and cream textiles. So cozy! We get goosebumps when our clients allow us to mix their Grandmother’s vintage rug with a velvet chesterfield sofa, a mid-century modern leather chair and a modern sputnik style chandelier! The key is in the mix. Try to balance out the looks so you don’t have too much of one particular style. Eclectic mixes can truly be magical!
INDIVIDUALITY According to a few sources reporting 2019 interior design trends, people are less concerned about their homes looking like they are straight out of a magazine, and more so wanting their home to really reflect their personality and style. Do you have an antique piece passed down from your great grandmother that sparks joy but you just haven’t found the right spot for it yet? ? More on Marie Kondo/KonMari Method and sparking joy next week… hold on to the meaningful pieces you love, even if it doesn’t quite go with the aesthetic you currently have. We can help you marry your styles and make sure the pieces you love have a home within your home. You should treat your home as if it were an extension of you. It should represent everything you love and everything that you are. 2019 is the year to be comfortable in your own skin, and your own home!
BATHROOM
STATEMENT WALLPAPER Yes, we love wallpaper, yes, we suggest adding wallpaper to your home, so go for it! Now that wallpaper is more accessible, more easily removable, and there are endless options, it’s pretty much a no brainer. If you are wanting to spruce up a small space and add dramatic effect, the solution is wallpaper. Have we convinced you yet? 😉
UNIQUE VANITIES There are some really freakin’ cool vanities out there. You can give an old vintage table new life by converting it into a powder room vanity (see inspiration photo above). You can get crafty and creative with your vanities, and even make it a weekend DIY project if you’re feeling up to the challenge. The Home Depot has great options for unfinished vanities that you can make your own without breaking the budget.
SCONCE LIGHTING If there is room to do so in your bathroom, sconce lighting adds such elegance and a custom feel. We are seeing sconce lights more and more, especially with sconce lighting set in mirrors which is a look that we adore.
TILE PLAY As color and pattern options continue to expand for tile, it’s no wonder people are wanting to invest more in tile. It adds so much to a room! The powder room or a bathroom where the square footage is small are great spots for dramatic tile. You can make such an impact with tile, so why not? I have to be honest, it’s hard for us to choose tile because there are so many gorgeous options.
