TRENDSPOTTING TILE
Tile can be one of the most exciting parts of design. We all jump out of our seats to see new tile selections coming through! Keep reading to check out tile trends we’ve been spotting.
ENCAUSTIC
Encaustic is a fun word… it means, according to dictionary.com, “(especially in painting and ceramics) using pigments mixed with hot wax that are burned in as an inlay.” Encaustic tiles are gorgeous and so variable. Great for a statement in any kitchen, bathroom, or laundry room, the options are endless. We love the dramatic tile pictured above that has bold, yet slightly muted colors that marry perfectly with rich blue cabinets and classic white backsplash tile. The Tile Shop is a great spot to check out new encaustic tiles – check out their encaustic tiles here.
TERRACOTTA
Terracotta is back and updated! The rustic red tones add a nice muted color, and compliment an otherwise neutral palette. See how designer, Kristin Dion, used terracotta tiles in her master bathroom (above) – it looks gorgeous! Find link to more photos and info about her master bathroom remodel here.
GEOMETRIC
Hexagon tiles are still a great look, and we are seeing more geometric patterns coming into play. There are now countless colors, shapes, and patterns to play around with. Above, you can see some of our favorites. Local company, Construction2Style renovated their home and their kitchen is spectacular! They created a custom pattern with local tile company, Mercury Mosaics, to make a one of a kind backsplash in their kitchen (see above). Geometric tiles can be quite modern, which is why All Modern is a great spot to look for these one of a kind tiles – find the link here.
HANDMADE/ARTISAN
Recently, we went to see homes featured in the Artisan Home Tour and these handmade-looking artisan subway tiles were seen in more than half of the homes. Use this tile for your kitchen backsplash for a fresh take on the classic subway tile look. This tile is also gorgeous in bathrooms, laundry rooms… anywhere you’d like for that matter! The look is dimensional, inviting, and classic.
FISH SCALE
Fish scale tiles are as equally adorable as they are unique. Local tile company, Mercury Mosaics, caught our eyes when we first saw their Morrocan Scale tiles (shown above). This pattern can be made timeless, or be packed with flair if you decide to go with a dense color. As you can see above, taking design risks can really pay off and this shower turned out fantastic! Some fun ideas include using this tile for a kitchen backsplash, shower tile, or for a powder bathroom floor.
TILE RUGS
Tile rugs, sometimes also called tile carpets, are so elegant and beautiful! What a gorgeous statement in a master bathroom (seen above). It’s a fantastic option to add interest to a space you would otherwise have left alone. You could also add a tile rug to a kitchen in lieu of a runner, and in an entryway for a bold “hello.”
CHEVRON/HERRINGBONE PATTERN
Laying tile in a herringbone or chevron pattern continues to be a trend, yet classic and timeless depending on which tile you choose. Here, we used a larger, dark tile to contrast with a bright and fresh mudroom (seen above). You can really get away with this pattern anywhere and it remains a favorite of ours! What tile trends have been catching your eye lately? Feel free to let us know!
